Icey moved restlessly thoughout her territory. She'd lived here for so long, it was a place that should bring nothing other them comfort, peace, calm. But instead the arctic femme was anxious. She hadn't seen Shadow about in so long, and the pack that had been growing so strong seemed to scatter. It was rare that she saw any of them anymore. She felt distant from everyone, even her own mate. It saddened the femme, and lead to another sleepless night, spent pacing a creekbed near the Karn densite.
Her paws danced lightly, despite her growing frame, splashing up tiny shimmering droplets. The water was a relief, for in the heat of summer, even the nights were occasionally unbearable to the snowy pelted wolf. She paused a moment, ears cocked, before dipping her head to the stream, pink appendage flicking at the water. It would still be several months off before he tongue had something other then her mate and water to groom. She hoped her pups would be born in the fall, that way they could come into the world at a comfortable and lively time. Instead of in winter's bitter chilld. The femme sighed, and sank to her haunches in the creek, enjoying the feel as the cool water soaked through her thich pelt. Most of the heavy winter undercoat was gone by now, but some still remained. The water helped soothe the itch. Auds twitched as she picked up a familiar sound, and visage danced with a weary smile as she looked up into the eyes of her mate.
Shadow had finally returned to Karn, after several nights of aimless wandering. It was a latent sense and desire to find himself. And to think over all the trouble that had plagued his mind in the weeks past. He still could not rest easy, and every time he looked at his mate, he felt his heart break, knowing she would be near ruin to know his fate, and that he had known it and not told of her.
In truth, the brute was wary. He knew when he told her what was to happen, Ice would fight and beg, determinded to find one way to stop it. Shadow knew that was impossible. That one could not escape fate, and that it would happen not matter what Ice or himself did. That he would die, one way, or another. Maybe not the way he had forseen in a brief flash, but that it would happen.
He had, though, finally resolved to tell his mate. As it be only right for her to know. Sure she would fret, and worry, but he knew in his heart that she would only hate him more for his silence. And so, he journyed home.
He was surprised at first, to find his mate not near the dens as he had expected. Instead, he tracked her scent to find her lying in the creek. He glanced down at his mate, marvelling at how beautiful she looked in the moonlight, before clearing his throat. The words nearly died in his throat when her golden eyes met his, but he knew he must go on. Pink appengage licked nervously, and his labrums gaped. He felt hot and cold, simultaneously and suddenly.
"I-I'm going to die."
Golden orbs glanced up at her mate in shock. Her brain seemed to stop, for tantalizing minutes in time. She inhaled sharply, unware that she had stopped breating.
"What? How? Why?" She lept to her paws, nearly flying up the shallow slope to touch Shadow. She nuzzled him gently before burying her muzzle deep into his fur, as if he would dissappear, and just his scent would keep her alive. She felt herself calm, knowing that he was still there. Pulling back slightly, she met his brilliant greet gaze.
"You can't." Her orbs pleaded with him, begging that this be just a rather cruel joke. "Please...Shadow...there must be some way? You've seen it, right? There must be some way to beat it." She blinked back tears, before shoving her nose back into his pelt. Words tumbled from her jowels, slightly muffled by fur.
"I can't lose you. This isn't my pack, I can't lead it. I did this all for you, the territory, the pups...I can't handle this without you. This isn't even my home?" She met his gaze again, not even bothering to hide the tears in her eyes, or the sob in her throat when she spoke.
Shadow had expected her initial reaction, when he told her of his impending death, but not her second. He had indeed expected the white femme to stand, in all her glory, and argue with him. But to just accept it, to cry in his shoulder, and beg him to make it all right...well, it was just heartbreaking. Or heart-wrenching. Shadow felt as if Raijan himself was ripping out the beating muscle with his own fangs. He turned green orbs on Ice, desperate to comfort her, to make everything all right, and knowing, that to tell the truth, he couldn't.
"I don't know how, or when yet, Ice. Just that I will." His ears and tail were down, and he himself fought off his emotions, desperate to be strong for at least one of them. He stood there with her, as she cried, for once, completely uncertain as to what would happen, and where they would go from there.
