They had traveled far, coming into this land unnoticed by the two other packs. A few good days had gone by with the pack trying to settle in, mark the boarders and hunting. They all needed time to rest, whether it was physically or mentally. The trauma of what had forced them here still shone in their eyes. The death of many members was taken a toll on them. But the pack was still a large one.
Amer cinnamon colored Alpha paced the small clearing the pack had made as their den site. Her flame orbs deep in thought. It was time that she filled in the empty ranks and comfort her pack. With her mate gone now the stress was now all weighed down on her shoulders. She felt as if she might be crushed under the weight. But once this issue was done, things should be abit easier. Her pack was of mostly males now, having just her pup Riot and herself the only females. It broke her heart to loose so many of her warriors, her family and friends. Coming to a hault those orbs just a mirror trapped with the image of the fire that had tore their home down, looked up. Glancing at her pup, black as night sitting there in the shadow of a large rock, waiting.
If Riot knew something was to happen then surely the others would to. Thus that meant they would be close, if not watching her pace in her thoughts. She sighed and rolled her muscular shoulders. She needed a good run, a hunt, a spar. It was time to get the pack back on their normal rout. Lifting her muzzle up, jaws parted to let out a howl calling all her members to her. She decisions were all made now. Time to name those that would be promoted, to have the pack go on a hunt together, to pick back up on their training. As her howl ended she placed herself in the middle of the clearing, sitting upon her haunches. She sat there proudly, strong and ready, an image of how an Alpha should look.
---------------- Ebony pup with silver grey eyes yawned but kept alert. Something was about to happen, she knew it before her mother started pacing the clearing. she saw it in those fiery eyes, in the lowered head, the hunch shoulders. Yes, her mother was in thought, of something important too. It had to be important for otherwise her mother would have acted by now. Sitting in the shade of the rock behind her, her eyes lifted to the dark sky darkening each moment as thunder clouds blew in.Rain is what they need, the opposite of that they had just gone through. Rain, no gentle and so different from Fire. Fire and humans had killed her father, the figure she had looked up to. It had killed her siblings, leaving her all alone with no other pups to play with, it had killed her mentor who she dearly respected. And now she had just her mother, her only blood relative and for that she was so thankful. She couldn't bare to have lost her too.
Her mother had been so good, so comforting and wise as she had been in overbearing sorrow. Her mother, she was so strong, it only made Riot see her in a new light, wanting to be like her. To be so strong and carry on what loosing everything. She knew her mother was very close with everyone in the pack, unlike Riot, and to loose so many other than her mate and pups. Riot shook her head in wonder, she could only hope that one day she could be like that. But before she could be anything she needed to get back into her training, but without her mentor how could she? Unless her mother had thought of another to train her. Riot shivered with the unknown, she loved not knowing things to the last minute, the rushing feeling, the thrill.
Nina's howl made Riot stand up, returning back to the world from her thoughts. Finally it was time, finally her questions would be answered. Silently she walked over to her mother to sit on her left side. This had always been her place, the left side of her mother. She had fought fr that place among her brothers, overpowering them. Naturally Riot was a dominate female like her mother but had the looks of her father, given that her eyes were different. Neatly she placed her tail around her side and waited with her mother for the others to come.

The first to answer the call was Sylphid. He had been with the pack for all his life, and had been through the pack during the great fire and the fury of the humans. He remembered it all to clearly: The peaceful warrior pack's camp, serene and bustling with life one moment, laughter and smiles abound, and it struck. The humans and wolves in the area had never particularly gotten along; it was a tense relationship, neither side giving way nor being openly hostile. but the fear in the humans grew. Fear for their young, fear that those precious children would we crushed under the mighty jaws of the feared wolf. So they had decided to nip the cian pack in the bud. Gathering a small amount of their forces, the humans had arrived with their deadly magic; fire, loving warmth provider, but the lord of death and violence. And death and violence dirupted the peace and prosperity of the ever growing pack. The grief was still raw in his heart. The humans had thrown their sticks of fire onto the dens, being to cowardly to actually fight the wolves. Many died as the fire spread, and not just the warriors of the pack. Elders and pups had been caught up in the ferocious flames, and he could still hear their whimpers, screams, and strangled cries as they were enveloped in flames. Attempting to compose himself, his usual friendly look replaced by a solemn and grim expression, he traveled towards Nina. Sylphid himself had lost several family members in the pack, and the wound was cutting deeper and deeper. But Alphess Nina's loss added another pile onto his own. Her mate had perished in the fire, and now only she and Riot remained. Arriving, he lowered his head, signaling respect for the Alphess. "Alphess Nina." He said, meaning flowing behind those two simple words. Still down-casting his eyes, the handsome brute thought of Gawain. Now that he thought of it, Gawain, er rather, Fang was one of the wolves who had survived. He silently thanked the fates. Gawain was his best friend, one of the only wolves who truly understood him. But then again, he hadn't seen the other brute in days... He suppressed the negative thought. There were already too many to those.

Gawain was enjoying his moments of temporary loneliness. Being the lead Epsilon meant that at least one hunter is always going to be around and bother you. Or so it was before humans destroyed their pack. Gawain didn't loose anyone close to him during the fire. Thanks to his difficult personality he had no friends excluding Sylph, and he didn't have any family. But he lost a bunch of good hunters. For some time he would have to hunt alone, which meant he needed to know surrounding areas better. He seemed to care not, but he wondered how long will he be able to hide the sadness deep inside. Just like anyone, he was mourning after the tragedy that hit their pack, but he didn't want to show it.
Gawain heard Nina's call. He didn't know here too well, but she knew him good enough to not be bothered by his behavior. After all, she was twice as old as he was. Nina wasn't far from his current location, so it won't take him long to get there. He ran slowly to warm up, but before he could speed up he was already at their new den. Sylph was already here, and so was Nina and her pup, Riot. He approached them, with his face showing nothing but dissatisfaction, as usual.
"Sylph. Good to see that you are well." Then he looked at the alphess blood-colored eyes. Maybe it wasn't a bright idea to greet Sylph first, but he always did more important things first. "Nina, and young Riot. I assume that you are fine as well. So, we are going to finally do something, or do you want to tell us we may return to idleness for unspecified time? I hope it's the first one"

Jarl, though being a natural leader, fought his own instincts, and sought to distance himself from the grief-struck remains of his pack. He acted tough, covering his sorrow by lashing out at practically anything he could. His heart too, was broken. The grief yet was still so near, and to see if on the faces of the others only brought him more agony.
He had been close with the Alphena's mate. Had called the brute friend, and had cared for him deeply, as Jarl did all his friends. He had respected the male, and it had been obvious, that there was respect too, returned to him in many ways. The Alpha had been a wolf Jarl would have called 'best mate'.
The silvery-eyed brute stared hard into the small stream before his paws. Anger flared. He cursed himself, a thousand times over for never speaking with his late friend. Never telling him how much he meaned.
And then, being forced to leave him behind as they fled. It left a truly sour taste in the male's mouth, and he spit, hoping to rid himself of it. The wolf cared for all his peers, and the majority of other wolves here. Granted, he'd never tell them that, but it was true nonetheless. And to just leave their dead burned carcasses behind was...devastation. It was betrayal, a thing Jarl hated with every fiber in his being. He had left them behind, when they would have done everything for him.
His scorched tail flicked restlessly, and he longed to place it into the cooling water, but dared not. It was a tangible reminder in his intangible grief of what he had done, and what he had lost.
If only he had been faster...gotten there quicker...the brute's thoughts began to drift as he watched the rippling water swirl by him.
Then, a howl broke through them. Jarl turned, and cocked his ears. The Alphena of his pack was calling, and, in his grieving state, her's would be the only call that he would answer. Slowly, the brute hefted himself to his paws, and took one quick drink from the stream, before heading back towards the pack's new dens. His gate was strong, sure and swift, but his scorched tail hung limply behind him, betraying his state of mind for any of wolf-kind to see.
He approached the femme, seeing her pup Riot and the brutes Sylphid and Gawain already there. He greeted the Alphess first, with a bow of his cranium, and a "My Lady," before nodding at the others. "Hello Riot, Sylphid, Gawain." He then waited patiently, for what his alphess would say.

Christoph, the enormous black brute, had been out wondering when he heard Nina's call. He was a loner before he had found the pack, but had been their before the attack. He knew who the alpha used to be and had many thoughts of attempting to over-through him but never really got the chance too. He snorted slightly at the thought of the other brute having been killed by the humans and flicked his long black tail, the tip of it brushing the ground despite his monstrous height, and shook his head. What would become of their once powerful pack without that alpha? Sure Nina was around, but she was a girl. What could a girl manage to accomplish? She needed an alpha male around. Maybe he would get a chance now.
He grinned slightly, his unnaturally large teeth almost glowing white against his pitch black fur as he began to make his way towards the den sight. He knew now what he was going to do. He would try to win Nina over and gain the alpha position! What could go wrong?
After a few moments he arrived at the den sight to see the rest of the survivors of the human attack already assembled. He was fashionably late once again, 'I gotta quit that...' He thought to himself as he moved to greet Nina before sitting himself down, towering over all the other wolves around. The only one that might have been close to his insane size was Jarl, but he still towered over the old brute.

Nina sat there silently awaiting for her members to come, and when they did she returned their greetings with a simple nod. She gave a flashing grin to Gawain's comments but the expression never touched her eyes. In her mind she was repeating what she would say to them, organizing her thoughts. She was pleased she would not need to wait long, but at the same time she wanted more time. Her right side was so empty, the place her mate would have sat next to her, made it so easy to talk to the pack in hard times. And now she was being put to the test.
She sighed softly before her maw parted as she spoke in her soft tone."As you all know we have lost many members, leaving ranks empty. We need to get back on our paws and back into our normal routine. That means we will be busy as we all try to fill in those missing ranks. Sylphid, your are my trusted Beta, i would like you to help me make sure things get done without overworking anyone. Christoph it is time you are given a rank, you will be a Gamma under Jarl's supervision. I would also like you to help Gawain in hunts since he is our only hunter. We need to get ourselves back into top shape, back to our training and sparring. Everyone must spar with every member in this pack. We are all different in our skills and talents, it would be best to learn from each other. Riot my dear, i will like you to take on the role as Scout, but not without an adult. I've seen eagles and they are large enough to pick you up to feed their family. Jarl my good Warrior, would you mind Mentoring Riot as well in the ways of the pack and warrior life? She paused to looked down at her black night pup, who had her focus on Jarl with excitement. Returning her gaze back to the others, mostly Gawain."As far as hunts go, we will all take part in it. Large prey roams here and i do not want Gawain risking his safety one hunting alone. Sylphid, Jarl and i will mark the borders this evening. She looked at the two wolves who were her closest friends. Sure she trusted Gawain and Christoph, but there was a certain bond she had with the other two. Plus Gawain and Christoph could talk abut hunts while watching Riot.
Mentally she chuckled, knowing full well Riot would be up to her tricks and laughs once she had left her with the two "victims"."Gawain, Christoph will we are on boarder patrols, please watch over Riot..and closely too." And then she smiled, one that had finally touched her eyes. With that she had done speaking. Now she just needed to wait for what her pack had to say in return.
---------- Riot sat there as each member arrived, tail wagging. Though the pack was in hard times, she couldn't help acting like the pup she was. Had not this been an important meeting she would have ran up to each member in greeting, and maybe pester them too. Her silver grey orbs looked at her mother as she spoke, absorbing each and every word as if she didn't she would perish. But when Nina mentioned her being Scout and having a mentor her gaze darted right to Jarl. She liked the older male, never playing her tricks on him unless she knew for sure he wouldn't get mad, always looking up to him as a model with his skills as a warrior.
Her body shivered in excitement, wanting to jump around and yap her head off. At this rate she would need to run, but hearing that Gawain and Christoph would pup sit her made her frown. That was till her eyes sparked with her sly grin. Oh yes they could try to keep a close eye on her, but in the end she would slip away. Her nose twitched before she sneezed. Looking up at her mother she smiled. Her mother was done talking now but sadly that didn't mean the meeting was over. With a huff she muttered to herself to keep still.

Gawain didn't have to wait long until the other two survivors came. That old warrior, Jarl, was first. Gawain was curious about him, they had parallel ranks after all. Then Christoph came. Gawain disliked this brute's size, it made him dangerous to the ones around him. Finally Nina began to speak. Christoph became a gamma. Wise choice, Gawain wouldn't be able to hunt with him. But then Nina said the Christoph will hunt with him... "This is ridiculous. I could hunt by myself just fine. But if it's the alphess' wish..."
Then she told them about sparring, nothing out of ordinary. Gawain didn't listen anymore until he heard that he will have to take care of Riot. This little devil will surely regret any tricks... There was still one thing he should point out. A very annoying thing. Thing that angered him. It doesn't matter if she is alpha or not, she doesn't have any right to do this, especially with everyone else around. Maybe it was strange, but it's just part of his hard personality.
"Hmph. I'd like to remind you, Nina, that knowing my name doesn't give you the right to use it. The same goes for you, Jarl. Other than that, nice speech. A little boring at times, but it's to be expected. It is a meeting, after all. As for hunting, I would be perfectly fine by myself, but if you insist... but that doesn't mean I won't tell Christoph to go and play if he gets in my way. That's all. Riot will be safer than she'd like to.

Silver eyes watched distrustfully as a large black brute appeared, later then the rest, on scene. Jarl didn't care for this Christoph. He didn't trust him, somehow, some basic gut instinct was warning him of the danger to his Alphena, and though he didn't have the backing to put his paw on any specific issue...well, lets just say, he would keep a close eye on this brute. How was it that saying went? Ah, yes, keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Eventually this great black beast would slip up, and when that happened, he would be there, ready to defend his Alphena and pup, to the death.
But then Nina was speaking again, and Jarl flickered his ears forward, listening attentively. He shifted his paws and flicked his tail in satisfaction to learn that Christoph would be placed under his control. That gave him a bit more security, knowing he could watch the brute under the pretense of training. Yes, that would work out quite nicely. Jarl nodded when the firey femme mentioned training. It was only natural, and with other wolves about, being prepared was a necessity. The large brute's tail however, broke into a slow, pleased wag when Nina mentioned that he would be mentor to Riot. He was quite fond of the pup, she reminded him much of himself at her age. His thoughts flickered to those of the dead, and he swore to make sure that she knew that he did truly care. At that, he stilled, realizing he would probably have to leave his previous uncle-like role to the pup, and become more of a father figure. He did not want this youngster to fumble in the unbalance that her life now held with the loss of her sire. His ears twitched, about to lower in grief, but the older brute managed to keep them erect. He would Not display his grief here, for all to see. That was a weakness, and not something he displayed; just like the deafness that infected his right ear. Now that the wolf that he would have called brother had passed, only one was left that he was aware of knowing his weakness, and that was Nina. He smiled at the femme, hoping to share with her was little confidence he had left.
But it was then that Gawain spoke up, and Jarl bared his teeth in a silent snarl at the brute. None, no one, spoke to the Alphess that was. As Alphena of these lands and pack, Nina had the right to command any wolf she chose. Jarl's hackles rose, making the large-boned brute appear even bigger then his truly was. He turned, facing Gawain full on, and stared hard into the other wolf's eyes. He found the remark to himself of little concern. This wolf wasn't a gamma, so it wouldn't matter if there be issues between them, Jarl didn't have to command him. But the slight to the Alpha? That was unforgivable.
"And I should expect the same be said for you, Gawain," Jarl hissed, spitting the brute's name. "Just knowing the Alphena's name does not give you the right to disrespect the leader of our pack!." He continued to stare hard at Gawain, positioning himself slightly so he was between the wolf and Riot and Nina. He spoke aside to the she-wolf, voice softer and more like his normal tones, then when he had called on the brute before him.
"If it is alright with you Nina, Riot could run the boarder patrol with us. She seems anxious to burn some energy, and I would not so easily trust her in the care of one who would show such disrespect." There, he had turned the tables. Turned the job of watching the Alpha's pup from one of a chore, to one of great responsibility, one that Gawain was not worthy of. He waited, to see if the brute would give, and request it back, or stand his ground. As well as for the response of his Lady.
OOC: Gawain and Jarl can still be friends. He isn't writing the wolf off completely. (in case you're worried) He's just really stressed with everything that's happened, and anything he sees as disrespect towards wolves he cares for will make him snap.

As Gawain entered, Sylphid breathed a relatively quiet sigh of relief. Attempting to smile for his closest friend, he said, a bitter smile on his face "Fang, I'm glad your alright..." He then nodded a greeting to Jarl, but the gentle smile that had played on his lips quickly vanished with the arrival of Christoph. He had tried to make an effort to get along with the giant brute, but their personalities had clashed. But he was civil enough in his nod. The beta listened intently to what Alphess Nina had to see. He needed to be there for her, as now the weight of caring for the pack was now on her shoulders alone. He gave an extremely faint ghost of a smile as she suggested that Riot be a scout. The devilish, but adorable pup would be okay as a scout, but definitely better than if she were a gamma or an epsilon, or even if she just remained a rank-less pup. He nodded again as Nina kept on talking, showing he was listening intently. As Gawain made a smart remark, Sylphid shot a glance at him that obviously said Not now, please.... He understood the brute's statement on how he could hunt by himself, but the name thing was a bit to far. Closing his eyes, he regained his composure and opened them again. The handsome beta then stepped forward, and took his place right behind Nina, the traditional spot of the betas, always right behind the alphas. Or alpha in this case. In that moment, another batch of memories flashed through his head at this thought. The brute frantically ran to and fro, searching for a way out, any way out. A small pup dangled from his jaws. It was his sister's remaining offspring. She, her mate, and the rest of their litter had been consumed already in the flames. The young pup was the last of his parent's litter. The pup's uncle finally calmed his mind for the sake of the youngster. The flames drew closer as time went on, and soon the inferno surrounded the brute. All seemed hopeless. Suddenly, a human face appeared through a clearing in the flames. the human's face was a face a twisted happiness as he drove a piece of sharpened wood forward. Before Sylphid could react, his nephew was dead and skewered on the sharpened stick. Screaming in rage, the brute jumped, with no regard for his own life, and the human's face contorted into an expression of fear as the wolf came upon him. A more vicious killing could not be found. He let the human suffer, and then left it with it's throat ripped, but barely alive, as the flames consumed it. The brute promptly broke down into sobs, the force of his grief racking his bodySnapping out of his trance, he returned to his grim but calm expression.

So, the old wolf was upset, huh? Gawain expected that it may happen. But he wasn't the one who started it. By now, everyone should know about this one simple rule. However, the only one who remembered it was Sylph, who could use his name. Granted, no one not knowing his name was around. Because of Nina, Christoph knew his name. He didn't trust that black mountain, perhaps Jarl idea to take Riot with them was good. He had to end this quickly, arguments weren't good after recent events.
"You aren't helping, Jarl. I don't ask for much, but you ignore it. Very well. Nina, I apologize. You must be tired or something... but I see no justification for Jarl. You don't have the responsibility of keeping the pack alive, so you should remember not to use my name..." He paused and looked at Christoph. "...in inappropriate company. I hope that it won't happen again... But I agree that you should take Riot with you. Indeed, some can't be trusted, I don't include myself in this group, though...If you know what I mean."
Gawain hoped it will be enough. He apologized, but he couldn't forget about everything. Soon he caught Sylph's look. His friend didn't like this argument. Of course, who did?
"Sorry Sylph. I'll try not to start any fiery arguments" Fire. A bad comparison, but it was too late now. Gawain hoped that this mistake won't bring any troubles.

The older wolf paid little heed as the pack's beta moved to the Alphena's side. At least he knew she had protection when his back was turned. Auds slipped forward, listening to Gawain's response. He was confused at first, and his head tilted as he listened to show it. He couldn't figure out why the brute kept pointing fingers at him... And then, he realized his error.
He had jumped to anger so quickly, and it seemed now, to be over nothing. The brute had not been disputing orders given by the alpha as he had originally thought, instead just stating their dislike of the use of his real name.
The silver eyed brute deflated almost instantly, knowing he had royally screwed up. His fur fell, flattened upon his flanks, and het met Fang's eyes in apology.
"I'm sorry friend. I acted rashly without considering why it was you were bothered." he bowed his great head, "Please forgive me." He felt bad already, now, for what he might have just caused at the meeting, and that let the guilt from earlier slip back in. He lowered head now, and silver eyes met the green beneath their paws. It was all his fault... He could only hope the other wolves didn't notice his moment of weakness. Quickly, he shoved those feelings away, buring them to mull over later, and returned his, slight grief struck, silver-eyed gaze, to Fang. Softly, so the others might not hear--
"And, no, I do not have the responsability of leading the pack, but might I remind you that I had lost many very dear to me, and so do not always think as rationally as I should, in such time of grief and sorrow." And then louder--
"However, I do believe excuses are a sign of weakness, and therefore promise that the slip up will not happen again."
With this, the brute moved away from the group, and sat down, though still well within ear shot. He would distance himself slightly, lest he show them how much he was really hurting.
OOC: Jarl's thoughts = my own. XD I honestly thought that by the "just cause you know my name, doesnt mean you can use it" meant that he didnt like Nina giving him orders. XD I'd forgotten about the name-use bit. lol. So, sorry Lykos.

Christoph silently listened as Nina spoke. He wasn't exactly happy about the position he got stuck with but hey, it was better then what he had before, which was nothing. He snorted slightly at the idea of having to go hunting with Gawain, the cocky brute who seemed to think he was better then everyone but he would do as he was needed.
However, when Gawain basically disrespected Nina and mentioned that he would tell Christoph to go off and play, his hackles rose and he growled lowly, "You need to choose your words more carefully." He growled dangerously, narrowing his crimson eyes as he glared at Gawain.
He silenced himself though when Jarl spoke up and listened to the old brute's words snorting slightly, though not in dislike and when Gawain replied and growled lowly.
"Ok.......This is starting to really grate on my nerves.......Why does everyone treat me like I'm just a pile of shit? What in the world did I do? I know I'm not the easiest guy to get along with but give me a break ok?" He exclaimed, flattening his big, triangular ears. True he tended to be cold-hearted but he still had feelings, even if he did tend to mask them most of the time.

Nina sighed as tension between her members raised. Her ears flattened and lips pulled back in a silent snarl. The amber colored female indeed did and could be very fierce when her temper flared up. Her flamed colored orbs burned with annoyance. Getting up on her paws she walked over to Gawain, close enough so that she might whisper just a few words to him. "Fang..forgive me for using the wrong name. But please..i need everyone in this pack to work together. If we are all kept busy and reminded that we have each other, it will help ease the sorrow and grief in our hearts." She said softly. Nina had a good control on her temper unlike her mate had been. She had always been the one to calm his anger and soothe down the fur that raised up.Turning to Christoph as he spoke she shook her head. "Christoph you would not have been accepted into the pack had not my past mate thought you would fit in among us. But not only do you have to prove yourself to me, but also the others. We are a close family that looks out for one-another. Do not take it to heart if they do not trust right away, it is how the pack works." She replied in her easy soothing tone. Then her eyes turned to Jarl who had placed himself slightly away from the others laying down. Walking over she gently head-butted his shoulder in a friendly gesture. "Do not hold everything inside my friend...sometimes it is ok to show your emotions. It wont make you weak in anyway, but strong to be able to show how you feel in front of others." She whispered to him. Stepping back she looked over her pack. "Calm the storm within you...Lets act like a pack and hunt like one. We hunt together, we become closer and stronger together." She said as she lifted her head up slightly abit more. Then her orbs turned to Riot. "And you, you will not join the hunt but watch and learn. I don't want to lose you as well. Do you understand?" Her tone was strict, demanding not to be disobeyed. ----------------------- Riot crouched down as temper's flared, eyes narrowing. She didn't like it one bit and if something happened she would protect her mother and Jarl. One could call her foolish or brave, but Riot had loyalty that could not be matched by many. It didn't matter that she was a pup, she had the natural instinct to protect and act like a warrior. As her mother went to calm things down, Riot closed her eyes. She needed to calm her own thundering heart and rushing blood in her ears. She had to calm her own fear and anger, almost relating to Jarl as she opened her eyes seeing him. Her mind was far to sharp for someone her age, and she had the ability to read one's emotions as clear as the stream. Getting up after her mother was done speaking to the others, she trotted over to Jarl and sit next to him. Ears flattened as her mother pinned her with "that" gaze. She knew better than to go against her mother, specially when she gaze her that look. She nodded to Nina with a sigh. She knew was would either ruin the hunt or get herself hurt if she tried to join in, making her frustrated that she was so young.
